Jury Spotlight: Selma Ahmed

This year The ANDYs have added five seats to the “table” for rising stars to participate on the world-class Jury. We believe the more senior jurors can learn just as much from them, as the rising stars can learn from the senior jurors. This unparalleled access is critical to our industry’s future. Selma Ahmed is a Creative with adam&eveDDB in London.

What was your introduction to the advertising industry?

I had an unconventional journey into the industry, as I really had no idea that it even existed. I didn’t go to an Ad School – and for that I’m very grateful. It meant I could create my own vision of what good advertising looks like, rather than someone else’s. I studied History of Art at Uni and then by complete coincidence I bumped into someone who told me there was a job where they pay you for your ideas. I applied that night to the IPA summer school and never looked back…

As a rising star of the ANDYs Face the Future Campaign, how/what else can the industry do to be more inclusive?

My own experience has really taught me that in this industry –  it all comes down to respect. Genuine, sincere respect for people, their lived experiences and their talent.  As much as we open the industry up and create more opportunities, fundamentally, when people walk in the door they need to feel valued.  So, I’d say – put your ego to the damn side and show some respect!

By submitting work into The ANDY Awards, not only may your work be awarded and celebrated widely but funds are earmarked to put towards: charitable donations,  scholarships, mentorship programs, and more programs that invest back into the advertising and marketing industry. andyawards.com
