What first drew you to the advertising/marketing industry?
I studied economics in college and took a few marketing classes along the way. I’ve always been interested in marketing, the way brands tell stories through marketing and creativity has always fascinated me. As my studies and personal interests intersected, I realized the similarities between economics and marketing. There is an overlap in studying the way people make decisions, just through different lenses. Once this clicked, I decided to focus on marketing. My economics education helped set the foundation early in my career and knowing the basics of supply and demand helped me develop an eye for marketing trends.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned that’s helped you in your career?
“The nature of your attitude creates your circumstances.” I learned this at an event and it stuck with me. Every one of my accomplishments was only possible when I put my mind to it and found bravery, determination, or whatever the situation required to succeed. From battling impostor syndrome to navigating stress, your mindset will influence how you face challenges. This really puts everything into perspective.
I reminded myself that honesty and authenticity are very important. You must be true to yourself and your work. Marketing is all about building relationships between brands and consumers. Authenticity is the key to successful marketing. It’s crucial to have that in your everyday work, too.
How has community-building and networking helped you in your career? Any tips for new grads?
I grew up in Turkey and moved to the U.S. for college. This transition was overwhelming; it felt like everyone else knew what they were doing and I was the odd one out. On top of that, in the midst of my studies, COVID hit. Everything became remote. When I graduated, I knew it was important to find in-person opportunities to network, discover opportunities and build a community, so I made it a priority to attend events and clubs that centered around networking.
It can be intimidating to put yourself out there. I decided I’d say yes to as many opportunities as possible, and I encourage others to do so. It’s especially important when you’re new to a city, a job, or an industry. You never know who you’ll meet! All the jobs I’ve landed after college were a result of networking.
What’s the best industry resource you live by (besides the Ad Club)?
I follow ad trade publications such as Ad Age, Adweek and Campaign, and The Deep View newsletter, all of which help me stay abreast of industry trends and changes.
I also found communities that host recurring events like 212NYC and Digital Marketers NYC. These events offer education and opportunities to connect with peers in the industry.
