If you had to choose one specific creative piece (this can be a song, photo, artwork, movie, play, etc.) that best reflects your professional journey, what would that be and why?
The movie is somewhat a metaphor for my career: a beautiful lucid dream where the journey is the destination . . . and it is filled with really smart, fascinating people.
What was the turning point, or most important moment, in your career? How has this moment led you to the leader you are today?
A big turning point for me was when I started to want to give back to the community and share what I’ve learned. I recently discovered that the Tibetan Buddhist Lojong practice is all about how true happiness comes from concerning ourselves with the well-being of others. Applying this practice is definitely a game-changer.
Tell us about a female figure who’s had a major impact in your life/professional journey.
I was given the same initials as my great grandmother, Elvira Yanez de Escutia. She was a poet and playwright who led a powerful women’s group in 1860s Mexico called Grupo Femenil Patriotico. She’s been a spiritual guide to me throughout my life, even though I never met her.
What is the bravest thing you’ve done in your career so far?
Warren Buffet says, “The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything.” Trying out that advice is the bravest thing I’ve done in my career so far.
