Alana Meraz
Manager of Media Partner Promotions, NWSL
What first drew you to the advertising/marketing industry?
Once I got a taste of the sports business innerworkings, I knew that’s what I wanted to do in my career and decided to pursue a degree in business sports and media at Arizona State. I find the way sports companies and leagues market themselves to current and new customers very interesting. Being part of how marketing comes together behind the scenes is fulfilling and exciting.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned that’s helped you in your career?
In college, I was taught that networking is transactional, but I’ve come to believe that authentic networking and relationship management are what’s more important. Focusing on what you can get out of every person you meet through work will lead to a lot of empty, shortsided connections. When I was coming out of college, post-pandemic, there was a strong desire to make real human connections. That became my motivation to create Latinx in Sports, a non-profit organization dedicated to building community, awareness and representation for Latinos across the industry. I craved meaningful connections with people who look like me and have a common interest in the sports industry. That shared desire has grown our community with an authenticity that reinforces the fact that you can, and should, show up as your true self off the clock and on the clock. Don’t put on a “corporate mask” to try fitting into your workplace environment; stay true to yourself and your voice.
How has community-building and networking helped you in your career? Any tips for new grads?
As a New York transplant, I’ve relied a lot on networking to help me in my career and I’ve made some great friendships too. I’m grateful to everyone who is part of Latinx in Sports and those I’ve met through organizations like The Ad Club and every company I’ve worked with. Having people you can call upon for advice or even just to bounce ideas off grows your perspective and provides the support you’ll need throughout your career.
What’s the best industry resource you live by (besides the Ad Club )?
LinkedIn is part of my daily routine, I check it every morning. My feed is filled with people looking to share resources and knowledge. It’s my go-to resource for building connections and keeping in touch with existing ones, finding events and staying updated on industry news.
I’m proud of the community that Latinx in Sports has grown into. We provide different career development and networking opportunities for anyone Latinx and interested in sports.
